Each year in Oregon, we strive to ensure we add more new referees than what we lose. There are some unavoidable reasons for referees quitting, but by and large many young referees quit refereeing simply because they tire of being berated and verbally abused during games they officiate. This can come at them from all angles: players, coaches, and spectators.
We are working hard to continue educating our referees and providing them opportunities to learn, develop and get better. In order to do this, we need the cooperations of players, coaches and spectators to "Get on With the Game" and respect the decisions of the referees. They will get some things wrong, and chances are, after the game they will reflect upon the game and work on some of the things they missed -- just as players are expected to do in order to further their development.
